Demystifying &defining Hypnotherapy

Updated: Apr 10

Hypnosis: is a natural state of mind where the critical factor (inner chatterbox or critic) of the mind is relaxed, and selective thinking is maintained. The relaxed critical factor, facilitates communication between the conscious and the subconscious mind. Selective thinking is commonly experienced as focused concentration. Achieving the hypnotic state is a skill, that requires practice.

The brain wave states accessed during hypnosis are the same as those accessed during meditation and prayer. (Alpha/Theta.)

People typically feel physically relaxed and mentally present.

Because of the manner in which our minds and brains are programmed, (this will be discussed in a separate blog post,) you can never be made to do or say anything that you are not willing to. We have all seen hypnosis stage shows where it appears that the person being hypnotized is under the control of the hypnotist, but they have to be a willing participant who accepts or says 'yes' to the instructions of the hypnotist.

In a hypnotherapy session, you are always in control and you and your subconscious mind must accept or decide that an idea or suggestion of behavior is something you have a desire to satisfy for it to be fulfilled. For example, a hypnotherapist can suggest that a client quit smoking and change behaviors that will assist them in this process but if they don't actually have a desire to quit and change the behaviors, they won't. In fact, hypnosis is meant to give clients more control by awakening to their innate power within, empowering them to override unwanted behavior patterns and limiting beliefs to achieve their goals and have successful, joyful lives.

Self-hypnosis. like meditation, is a technique that can be easily learned so that clients can use it as a tool for self-transformation on their own and for the rest of their lives.

Hypnotherapy: is an educational and self-improvement process that facilitates access to a persons internal resources to assist him/her in solving problems, increasing motivation, or altering behavior patterns to create positive change. It is the application of universally accepted, self discovery, techniques, and self improvement methods utilize during the hypnotic state, that helped to free a person from fear based programming and assumed limitations.
